Psalm 65

New International Version

Psalm 65^[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.

¹Praise awaits^[b] you, our God, in Zion;^(A)
    to you our vows will be fulfilled.^(B)
²You who answer prayer,
    to you all people will come.^(C)
³When we were overwhelmed by sins,^(D)
    you forgave^[c] our transgressions.^(E)
⁴Blessed are those you choose^(F)
    and bring near^(G) to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,^(H)
    of your holy temple.

⁵You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,^(I)
    God our Savior,^(J)
the hope of all the ends of the earth^(K)
    and of the farthest seas,^(L)
⁶who formed the mountains^(M) by your power,
    having armed yourself with strength,^(N)
⁷who stilled the roaring of the seas,^(O)
    the roaring of their waves,
    and the turmoil of the nations.^(P)
⁸The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
    where morning dawns, where evening fades,
    you call forth songs of joy.^(Q)

⁹You care for the land and water it;^(R)
    you enrich it abundantly.^(S)
The streams of God are filled with water
    to provide the people with grain,^(T)
    for so you have ordained it.^[d]
¹⁰You drench its furrows and level its ridges;
    you soften it with showers^(U) and bless its crops.
¹¹You crown the year with your bounty,^(V)
    and your carts overflow with abundance.^(W)
¹²The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;^(X)
    the hills are clothed with gladness.^(Y)
¹³The meadows are covered with flocks^(Z)
    and the valleys are mantled with grain;^(AA)
    they shout for joy and sing.^(AB)

Joel 2:23-32

New International Version

²³Be glad, people of Zion,
    rejoice^(A) in the Lord your God,
for he has given you the autumn rains
    because he is faithful.^(B)
He sends you abundant showers,^(C)
    both autumn^(D) and spring rains,^(E) as before.
²⁴The threshing floors will be filled with grain;
    the vats will overflow^(F) with new wine^(G) and oil.

²⁵“I will repay you for the years the locusts^(H) have eaten^(I)—
    the great locust and the young locust,
    the other locusts and the locust swarm^[a]—
my great army^(J) that I sent among you.
²⁶You will have plenty to eat, until you are full,^(K)
    and you will praise^(L) the name of the Lord your God,
    who has worked wonders^(M) for you;
never again will my people be shamed.^(N)
²⁷Then you will know^(O) that I am in Israel,
    that I am the Lord^(P) your God,
    and that there is no other;
never again will my people be shamed.^(Q)

The Day of the Lord

²⁸“And afterward,
    I will pour out my Spirit^(R) on all people.^(S)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,^(T)
    your old men will dream dreams,^(U)
    your young men will see visions.
²⁹Even on my servants,^(V) both men and women,
    I will pour out my Spirit in those days.^(W)
³⁰I will show wonders in the heavens^(X)
    and on the earth,^(Y)
    blood and fire and billows of smoke.
³¹The sun will be turned to darkness^(Z)
    and the moon to blood
    before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.^(AA)
³²And everyone who calls
    on the name of the Lord^(AB) will be saved;^(AC)
for on Mount Zion^(AD) and in Jerusalem
    there will be deliverance,^(AE)
    as the Lord has said,
even among the survivors^(AF)
    whom the Lord calls.^[b]^(AG)

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

⁹To some who were confident of their own righteousness^(A) and looked down on everyone else,^(B) Jesus told this parable: ¹⁰“Two men went up to the temple to pray,^(C) one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. ¹¹The Pharisee stood by himself^(D) and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. ¹²I fast^(E) twice a week and give a tenth^(F) of all I get.’

¹³“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast^(G) and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’^(H)

¹⁴“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”^(I)
